Meet Me In St. Louis is easily one of my favorite holiday movies - it's simple, charming, and fun.Katyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00287429151542133314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-667410643073985006.post-44207825777424326012018-12-16T15:58:14.624+01:002018-12-16T15:58:14.624+01:00Love this film in all its candy coated innocence. ...Love this film in all its candy coated innocence. Judy originally fought against doing it feeling that she had steadily been working towards adult roles and with Esther (a very lucky movie name for her what with this and A Star is Born) being a high school student it was a step back. But Mayer prevailed and once she started on the film she recognized that it was worth the risk, plus she met and fell in love with Minnelli, and the picture really cemented her superstardom when it was released.

As to the songs some don't thrill me either but The Trolley Song is a great whirling dervish of a tune and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (which was written expressly for Judy) is beautiful.

Margaret O'Brien does a great job with Tootie but the child is a borderline psycho waiting to happen! I was crazy for middle sister Agnes (Joan Carroll) who didn't get as much of the spotlight but was a sketch when she did.

The girl's suitors really are interchangable but both Leon Ames as Papa Smith and Harry Davenport as Grandpa add much to the film as do Mary Astor as the wise patient mother (it seems incredible that only three years before this she was playing the silky, venomous Brigid O'Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon) and Marjorie Main as the outspoken cook Katie.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
