Plot
Naive college graduate Amy (Emma Roberts) believes she's destined to be a great poet. Pressed to earn a living by her father (Reed Birney), she begrudgingly accepts a job at a sex shop while she pursues a mentorship with writer Rat Billings (John Cusack).
Opinion
Adult World really is, as Rat Billings would say, a bizarre little creature. Beside that, it is a very interesting, life journey film with some witty lines - it is a little bit similar to other Roberts' films, which is good.
What I liked the most about this film is the story. It might sound extremely boring when you read the storyline but it is not. I like all kinds of films, but, for me, the ones that stand out are those concerning ordinary stories, that really speak to the audience.
I've noticed how many complained about the poor character development, and about how annoying Amy was. To be honest, although she is way too anxious, I could feel empathy with her. You know, finally becoming an adult and realizing your dreams are dying and probably never coming true, and realizing that the only job you can get is the place you end up due to desperation only.
Emma Roberts is delightful as Amy, Evan Peters is also great as Alex, and John Cusack delivers one of the best performances of his career as Rat Billings. I've never seen Armando Riesco before, but he is terrific as transgender Rubia and completely steals the show.
Quotes
Amy: How about a little advice before I depart?
Rat Billings: Love... love until you hate. Then learn to hate your love. Then forgive your hate for loving it.
Rat Billings: How do you feel about failure?
Amy: I failed many times.
Rat Billings: That's good. Continue to fail. If you want to make art, you have to fail. And so, the hardest job is to fail better.
