Hello you and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks, a weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves where you share three movies to fit the theme of the week each Thursday.
For this 3rd Valentine's Edition week, we are dealing with memorable declarations of love. Without further ado, let's get started!
Before Sunset (2004)
Nine years after Vienna, Jesse and Celine meet again in Paris. Much like their previous encounter, they decide to spend time together until Jesse is supposed to catch his flight back to New York. Just before he leaves, Celine sings, "Let me sing you a waltz / Out of nowhere, out of my thoughts / Let me sing you a waltz / About this one night stand / You were, for me, that night / Everything I always dreamt of in life / But now you're gone / You are far gone / All the way to your island of rain ... I don't care what they say / I know what you meant for me that day ... Even tomorrow in other arms, my heart will stay yours until I die.". If this one isn't memorable, I don't know what it is.
Released from a psychiatric hospital, Pat is determined to win back his wife, and recently widowed Tiffany offers to help him. Eventually they turn out to be what each other need, although Tiffany realizes it first. At the end Pat finally tells her, "I love you. I knew it the minute I met you. I'm sorry it took so long for me to catch up. I just got stuck.". The perfect end to a brilliant film.
Ohh how could I forget about Silver Linings Playbook!? Such a good movie...and a perfect choice!
ReplyDelete- Allie
I've watched it something like a million times, I just couldn't forget about it
DeleteI've only seen Silver Linings Playbook and I love that movie so much. Great choice!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's such an amazing film
DeleteGreat picks! I especially love that you went with Before Sunset. It's probably the best in the trilogy. I also love that When Harry Met Sally is becoming rather popular today!
ReplyDeleteBefore Sunrise is my favourite, but Before Sunset is arguably the best one.
DeleteWhen Harry Met Sally is so perfect for today and Billy and Meg play that scene to perfection. I didn't love Silver Linings but I agree that the wrap-up scene was wonderfully done. I've never seen Before Sunset, I hated Before Sunrise so I didn't bother to see the others in the trilogy. I've heard this is better than the first but I'm so adverse to Ethan Hawke I can't imagine enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteSo many choices that fit today it was hard to get to three but these are the ones I winnowed down to.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)-Lovely adaptation of the Austen classic with Keira Knightley & Matthew MacFayden well matched as the headstrong Elizabeth Bennett and the reserved Mr. Darcy who secretly loves her. They are surrounded by a perfect supporting cast.
*Memorable Declaration-During a sweeping rainstorm in an isolated pavilion the drenched Darcy declares that he loves Lizzie most ardently!
Last of the Mohicans (1992)-Exciting, intense beautifully filmed reading of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel. Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe bring an electric chemistry to their characters which enhances all their scenes but particularly their romantic ones. Pitch perfect music score adds an extra dimension to the effectiveness of the film.
*Memorable Declaration-Under a waterfall fleeing from attacking Indians Nathaniel tells Cora when he must leave her “You be strong, you survive... You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.”
Somewhere in Time (1980)-At the premier of his first play writer Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is approached by a mysterious old woman who presses a locket into his hand with the words “Come back to me!” Years later Collier now a successful but blocked playwright impulsively takes a trip to an old resort where he spies a picture of once famous actress Elise McKenna (a breathtakingly beautiful Jane Seymour) from 70 years hence and becomes obsessed with her. Believing she is his destiny he searches for a way to travel back to her time. Preposterous but uber romantic time travel fantasy with the well matched leads and the gorgeous Mackinac Island selling the plot’s various implausibility’s for those able to suspend belief. Very involving if you like romantic movies.
*Memorable Declaration-In the guise of the character she is portraying on stage Elise goes off script and staring straight at Richard says: “The man of my dreams has almost faded now. The one I have created in my mind. The sort of man each woman dreams of, in the deepest and most secret reaches of her heart. I can almost see him now before me. What would I say to him if he were really here? "Forgive me. I have never known this feeling. I have lived without it all my life. Is it any wonder, then, I failed to recognize you? You, who brought it to me for the first time. Is there any way I can tell you how my life has changed? Any way at all to let you know what sweetness you have given me? There is so much to say... I cannot find the words. Except for these: I love you."
Before Sunset is best of the trilogy, but if you didn't like Before Sunrise (my favourite) I doubt you'll like this one.
DeleteI haven't seen any of your picks, but those are some great declarations!
I am still kicking myself for not thinking of When Harry Met Sally for this. Such a perfect scene.
ReplyDeleteThat scene in Silver Linings Playbook really sealed the deal for me on loving the film. So much so that I almost picked it this week.
I LOVE Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight SO MUCH and the last scene of Sunset is probably the best thing across all three movies. The most perfect ending... "Baby, you are gonna miss that plane..." LOVE.
Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight is my favourite trilogy for a reason :)
DeleteI have not seen any of the Sunrise/Sunset movies but, one day, I will since it takes place in Europe which I love. I am not too ga-ga over Silver Linings but that scene is a good one. I almost picked When Harry Met Sally because it is a good movie about friendship and love and his speech is perfect
ReplyDeleteThe Silver Linings Playbook final scene is probably the only part of the film people don't argue over.
DeleteSurprised this is the only mention of Silver Linings Playbook I've come across. It's an excellent film and that moment is perfect.
ReplyDeleteMe too, but the other picks are great as well.
DeleteI LOVE all three of these. Such great picks. Before Sunset is especially nice here, an I Love You via song. I too picked When Harry Met Sally. I had to.
ReplyDeleteI had to pick Before Sunset, that song is so beautiful it popped into my head immediately.
DeleteI love Before Sunset and I contemplated putting it on my list as well.
