Thursday Movie Picks: Just Not Funny Comedies

Welcome to another Thursday Movie Picks, the weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves that consists of picking three films to fit the week's theme.

This week we deal with those comedies that fail to do what a comedy is supposed to do aka make the audience laugh. My three picks? Well, I don't think I laughed even once while watching them.ù

Bad Moms (2016)

Three overworked mothers ditch their responsibilities to just have fun aka a story with some potential that was wasted because the writers did not know how to develop a story without filling it with clichés and predictable plot turns. Nor did they know how to do comedy because all the joke fell flat. Kathryn Hahn was able to make me chuckle a couple of times but only because she is amazing.

Baywatch (2017)

A lifeguard does some undercover work to find out who is selling a new synthetic drug on his beach. Based on the famous TV series, this film is ridiculous, to say the least. The story is terrible, the characters even worse, and the humour, well, if dick jokes is your kind of humour, you'll love this. It'll basically all you get.

CHiPs (2017)

It's about a rooker cop who is teamed with a California Highway Patrol pro who actually is an undercover FBI agent that investigates a heist involving crooked cops. Just like Baywatch, it's a remake of a TV series and it's just as bad, if not even worse. It sucks on every single level, especially on the humour which is pretty much all homophobic jokes.

  1. I only saw Bad Moms but I quite enjoyed it, mostly because of Hahn. She carried that film!

    1. She was great, but she wouldn't be enough to make me sit through the movie again. But maybe I'll check out the sequel for her.

  2. I doubt I will ever see these films unless they come on tv, I can't reach the remote and I am too sick to turn the channel

  3. I skipped all of these. Baywatch's reviews were disappointing because I actually thought the trailer looked funny.

    1. I only watched it because of Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra.

  4. I'm happy to say I've seen none of these though I've heard of all of them and they sounded awful and now that's confirmed.

This was an easy week, which is a shame since you always hope a comedy will be funny but my three most definitely were not.

All About Steve (2009)-Sandra Bullock, usually so charming and quirky makes a complete fool of herself in this alleged comedy about nothing so much as creepy stalkerism. A total misfire this is surely her worst film.

My Boss’s Daughter (2003)-Young dude (Ashton Kutcher) agrees to housesit for his boss in the hopes of scoring points with both the boss and his daughter. But almost as soon as he takes residence a litany of guests and lowlifes including his boss’s son tramp through the place doing things that any rational person would never do in someone else’s home. SO very stupid and extremely vile. Unfunny in the extreme.

Town & Country (2001)-Warren Beatty directed mishmash that sat on the shelf for years and deservedly sank like a stone on release. Just a terrible mess of a movie that has only the most tenacious plot line running through it. Stories are picked up and dropped willy nilly adding up to pretty much nothing. This notorious flop reportedly cost many, many millions of dollars but they certainly don't show on screen. Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn try to do something with their parts although they are ill-served by the script. Everybody else goes down with the ship, poor Charlton Heston and Marian Seldes are made ridiculous in yet another totally needless subplot. A perfect example of a director and studio lucky enough to gather a great group of talent and then squander them totally.

    1. Oh god, I watched All About Steve years ago because of Sandra Bullock. My taste in movies was terrible back then but I hated that movie. It was so stupid and unfunny. I think she won a Razzie for that role.

  5. Yeah, CHIPS and Bad Moms were meh. Didn't really hate it either, nor I'm not in a rush to watch them again. Haven't seen Baywatch, but probably will at some point because my wife loves The Rock.
