Well, hello there, just in case you missed the ceremony, you didn't bother checking who won and who lost and you didn't even read the title of this post, well, in that case, I'm here to tell you that SAM ROCKWELL IS A FUCKING ACADEMY AWARD WINNER! AND IT WAS ABOUT FUCKING TIME.
Excuse my language, it's just that I'm still so excited that he won and I haven't slept in more than 24 hours so I'm not to be accounted for the stuff I'm typing. But back to Sam Rockwell and how much this guy deserved the award. Though he has been awarded for playing Officer Dixon in Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, this Oscar is also for all those roles he delivered to perfection but nobody --and by that I mean the award people-- cared about. Just think about Moon or Conviction (which I saw yesterday for the first time and I was blown away by his performance and his genuine, real chemistry with Swank) or The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford or any other role he has played because this man puts his all in each performance he delivers. He plays assholes most of the time and makes you care about him. This man deserves all the awards in the world.
And his speech? It was just beautiful. He started with, "I'd like to thank the Academy. I never thought I'd say those words" and then went one and took a moment to shout out to Leslie, his girlfriend, and to dedicate the award to Philip Seymour Hoffman. Man, it was so moving, and Martin McDonagh almost cried.
As much as I'd love to spend all day and night talking about how great Sam Rockwell is, I guess I should mention the ceremony and other winners too.
I don't know how you all felt about him, but I absolutely loved Jimmy Kimmel, especially his opening monologue --which I almost missed because I thought the ceremony started at 2:30 AM (I have no idea what time that is in the US) like every goddamn time I watched it but now, this year it was 2 AM. Anyway, the monologue was brilliant. I admit not all of his gags worked there, but the jokes improved as the ceremony went on.

Anyway, the monologue was brilliant. I admit not all of his gags worked there, but the jokes improved as the ceremony went on.
I also loved the way Lupita Nyong'o and Kumail Nanjiani presented the Oscar for production design and spoke out for immigrants. At some point, Lupita said, "Like everyone in this room and everyone watching at home, we are dreamers. We grew up dreaming of one day working in the movies, dreams are the foundation of America." and Kumail added, "So to all the Dreamers out there, we stand with you." AND IT WAS SO FREAKING BEAUTIFUL.
Then there were the beautiful best original song performances. They were all amazing, especially This Is Me which was so moving. Call Me by Your Name's wasn't though, it was just dreadful.
The highlight of the night though was Frances McDormand's acceptance speech. "Okay, so I'm hyperventilating a little bit. If I fall over, pick me up cause I've got some things to say," she began.
"I think this is what Chloe Kim must have felt like after doing back-to-back 1080s in the Olympic halfpipe. Did you see that? Okay, that's what it feels like."
"I want to thank Martin McDonagh, look what you did. We are a bunch of hooligans and anarchists but we do clean up nice. I want to thank every single person in this building."
"And my sister Dorothy. I love you, Dot. And I especially want to thank my clan, Joel and Pedro "McCoen". These two stalwart individuals were well-raised by their feminist mothers. They value themselves, each other and those around them. I know you are proud of me and that fills me with everlasting joy."
"And now I want to get some perspective. If I may be so honoured to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight, the actors - Meryl, if you do it, everybody else will, c'mon - the filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinematographer, the composers, the songwriters, the designers. C'mon!"
"Okay, look around everybody. Look around, ladies and gentlemen, because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Don't talk to us about it at the parties tonight. Invite us into your office in a couple days, or you can come to ours, whatever suits you best, and we'll tell you all about them. I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider".
And now the boring part, winner & loser & my reactions

E (per me) va benissimo così.
Anche per me alla fine va bene. Tutto tranne L'ora più buia e Chiamami col tuo nome (non mi ha fatto schifo, ma non mi è neanche piaciuto quanto pensavo).
DeleteI didn't like "This is Me" at all. Then again, I'm not a fan of today's pop music. Plus, I found those lyrics to be very trite. At least it was better than that song from Mudbound which was co-written by Diane Warren who is a cancer to the world of music.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you didn't like the songs. I liked Mudbound's too.
DeleteI'm sorry. It wasn't from Mudbound. It was from Marshall.
DeleteOh, I didn't like that one either.
DeleteI wasn't that big a fan of Kimmel's monologue sadly, but he had some good jokes. McDormand was definitely the highlight. I felt like the movement was dormant at that point, but she lifted everyone up, it was amazing. YES Rockwell woo!
ReplyDeleteShe sure did. What a woman!
DeleteFirst, I didn’t mind Jimmy Kimmel although I am not one for him seeing the regular public with some actors although it was funny that Gal Gadot liked it better there than the actual Oscars. I did like many of his jokes and he could say things without incurring the ire of the regular public. First, I am sooooo happy that Gary Oldman won as his experience in creating something amazing far outweighs the kid or any other. I am glad Sam Rockwell won and he so deserved it for making a disagreeable character likeable. You root for him espec8ally near the end of the film. I am also glad that McDormand won and what she said was great but her freaky laughter made me feel uneasy about her actually. I loved Maya and, craps, I forgot the other lady who was hilarious! Maya looked horrible in that housecoat. I also liked Ashley Judd etc.. with what they said. I have not seen Shape of Water yet but loved 3 Bill Boards and would have been happy if they won. I knew Dunkirk would win in the Sound area and editing but so glad it didn’t win anything else because I found it loud and obnoxious. It’s funny but I think a lot of younger people love it where more mature ( I refuse to say older and I don’t mean mature mind wise...hahahaaaa) thought it was ok but not as enthralled with it as one would think. I was surprised by the best foreign film because of what I read but I haven’t seen any. I’m glad Get Out won in best screenplay just like Quinton Tarantino does with his films.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like that public thing either. Why do they have to do such stupid things?
DeleteOh, yes, Maya was great but that thing she was wearing looked terrible. The other one was Tiffany Haddish and I liked her too.
The foreign language shocked me. Everyone was saying The Insult (Lebanon) or The Square (Sweden) would win. I actually wanted On Body and Soul (Hungary) to win, but I wasn't expecting A Fantastic Woman. I saw it on Sunday morning and it may be new when it comes to Chilean movies, but it's nothing that hasn't been done in North America already.
I actually wanted McDonagh to win Best Original Screenplay because I loved every single bit of it and I love him.
I loved what Kumail said about how people who are not the same color as him can relate to his movies because he did it too. That was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteRockwell's speech was awesome, especially when he said "ski jet" instead of "jet ski"
THANK YOU for agreeing that War being robbed of Visual Effects was bullshit.
Who doesn't though? Blind people, that's who! War had by miles the best effects.
