Thursday Movie Picks: The Mrs Robinsons

A weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves

Between my brother’s birthday — which is today —, problems with my car and a fight with a coworker, I completely forgot to work on my Thursday Movie Picks for this week. So without any introduction whatsoever — and probably very little written below —, I leave you with my picks featuring a relationship between an old woman and a young man, aka the Mrs. Robinsons, a theme suggested by Getter over Mettel Ray

Don Jon (2013)
Jon Martello Jr. (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a modern-day Don Juan who, despite having a very active sex life and a very hot girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson), is more sexually satisfied by masturbating while watching pornography.

The Mrs. Robinson: Julianne Moore's Esther, the considerably older widow who forms an emotional and sexual connection with Jon.

Malèna (2000)
A 12-year-old Sicilian kid, Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro), falls in love with the town's most beautiful and sensual woman, Malèna (Monica Bellucci).

The Mrs. Robinson: Monica Bellucci's Malèna. Renato isn't actually in a relationship with her but he fantasizes about being with her a lot. So I guess it qualifies.

Rushmore (1998)
Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) is a precocious 15-year-old who is doing terribly in all of his clases as he doens't bother to study and spends all of his time enjoying extracurricular activities. His life takes an unexpected turn when he befriends a depressed industrialist (Bill Murray) and falls for a teacher (Olivia Williams).

The Mrs. Robinson: Olivia William's Mr. Cross.

  1. I've seen Rushmore and Don Jon. Being a JGL Stan I liked Don Jon quite a bit. When I went to it in theaters this old couple walked out during the porn montage. I laughed.

  3. I haven’t seen any of these. I am not sure I care to see the first one. Julianne Moore, like Kate Winslet drop their clothes in many films. I wond r if she did it in this film..why I wonder, I have no idea. The second film sounds good and I need to see Rushmore one day.

    1. I agree that Moore drops her clothes way too often but I really like her as an actress. I haven't seen the film in years so I don't recall whether she does or not, but it's possible considering what the film is about.

Rushmore is really a must see!

  4. I thought about putting Malena in the list but the problem is that I've only seen some of the shortened version of the film. Not the near-2 hour version which isn't shown here in the U.S.

    1. I've read somewhere that it isn't even considered an erotic thriller in the US because of the deleted scenes. I didn't love the film (actually, I hated it), but those are parts of the film. A version without them does not make sense.

  9. Have such a soft spot for Rushmore. And Belluci was perfectly cast. Sure was a darker movie than I was expecting.
