Thursday Movie Picks: Bookish Films

A weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves

I've been trying to write so much for the past few days — with very poor results, by the way —, I don't feel like writing anymore. I'm utterly uninspired. However, since we have a really, really nice theme I'm joining this Thursday Movie Picks week to talk about some book-related films I enjoyed. Which happens to be all romances because (apparently) I'm craving for a relationship lately.

Before Sunset (2004)
Nine years after meeting Celine (Julie Delpy) in Vienna, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) goes to Paris to promote his book inspired by the night they spent together. The two meet almost by chance and wander through the streets of Paris until Jesse is supposed to catch his flight back to New York. This film is one of my all-time favourites. I love how much the characters have grown since we first met them, and I love and hate how much I can relate to Celine.

Midnight in Paris (2011) - Review
While on a romantic trip to Paris with his fiancĂ©e (Rachel McAdams), Gil (Owen Wilson) is working on his first novel, but unfortunately, it's not going very well. That is until he's transported back to 1920s Paris, where he meets his favourite writers, musicians and artists. I adore this film and I'm feeling like Gil right now, trying to write something but stuck because I don't have ideas.

Notting Hill (1999)
William Thacker (Hugh Grant) is an unsuccessful Notting Hill travel bookstore owner who is barely making ends meet. His life changes when Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), a well-known American actress, enters his shop. I haven't seen this film is forever but it is very lovely.

  1. Midnight in Paris is the only Woody Allen film I've ever liked. I haven't seen your other picks.

  3. I really enjoyed Midnight in Paris. One of Woody's best latter day films and the cast for the most part are terrific.

Notting Hill was fine even though I though Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts were ill matched. He was better than she was.

I think I mentioned before I hate the entire Sunset trilogy and the two stars of them as well.

I'm having computer issues this week so while I have three I'm relying on the Google synopsis for clarity.

The Book Club (2018)-Four friends' (Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton and Mary Steenburgen) lives are turned upside down when their book club tackles the infamous "50 Shades of Grey." From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, they inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter.

The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)-Quirky dog-lover Jocelyn and many-time married Bernadette decide to start a book club exclusively dedicated to Jane Austen, primarily to help distract their friend Sylvia from the fact that her husband has just dumped her. Frustrated French teacher Prudie, Sylvia's daughter Allegra and sci-fi fan Grigg join up as well.

The Pillow Book (1996)-Nagito has a fetish for calligraphy on the human body and meets ideal soul-mate Jerome, an English translator sent to Japan. However, once Nagiko's father's gay publisher rejoins the scene, the story is overtaken by treachery and bloodlust.

    1. It breaks my heart when I hear people say they didn't like the Before trilogy. It's my favourite trilogy ever.

  4. I've only seen Midnight in Paris. I liked it well enough, but didn't quite love it. One of these days I'm gonna get to the Before trilogy.

  5. I have not seen any of the Sunrise/Sunset films and will see them one day. Midnight in Paris is another film I would like to see since I love time travel movies. I have seen Notting Hill which I called Nodding Off. It’s actually quite nice but typical rom-com. I absolutely hate that seen where she says she’s just a girl..blah blah blah...hurl.

    1. I actually don't remember much about Nothing Hill. I'm sure I'd hate it if I were to rewatch it haha.
