Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Scores and Theme Songs

a weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves

I am so glad it's time for another TV themed Thursday Movie Picks, even more glad that we have to pick series with great scores and theme songs — or at least that's how I'm going with it — because it doesn't require a lot of writing and I totally forgot to write it at the beginning of the week like I always do.

Friends (1994-2004)

This is easily my favourite theme song ever. I always sing and clap along, and kind of dance. I just love this song and I couldn't be happier it's in one of the greatest sitcoms ever.

True Detective (2014-2019)

Season 2 of this show is one of the few times when I never skipped the opening sequence because I absolutely loved Leonard Cohen's Nevermind.

Twin Peaks (1990-1991)

Score-wise, Twin Peaks easily has one of the greatest music of all times. I just love how chill and yet atmospheric it is.

  1. I love True Detective's songs. I still listen to the first two season's opening themes pretty ogten.

    1. They are so good, right? I still haven't seen season 3 but I loved all the music from season 1 and 2.

  2. I was a faithful Friends watcher like just about everyone else when it was on and will still stop and watch an occasional episode if I run across it. It had its up and downs but overall was a terrific show. The theme was fun until it became a hit and then it was played so often I was heartily sick of it.

I think I saw an episode of True Detective at someone's house but I didn't have HBO so seeing it regularly wasn't an option.

Twin Peaks is one that I came to too late to be able to make sense of it despite liking many of the cast members from other things. Some day perhaps I'll be able to catch it from the first episode and give it another chance.

I chose three enormous hits from the seventies, all with, I think, instantly recognizable openings.

Laverne & Shirley (1976-1983)-Two wacky single gals work in a brewery and look for love in Milwaukee.

    Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!
(Just an FYI according to an old Yiddish saying “A schlemiel is somebody who often spills his soup, and a schlimazel is the person it lands on.” Hasenpfeffer is a German stew.)

The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-1977)-Spunky, independent single woman moves to Minneapolis to start a new life. Lands as Associate Producer of the news at tiny WJM station. Spends the next seven years surrounded by classic characters.

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day
And suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?

The Jeffersons (1975-1985)-Prosperous dry cleaner George Jefferson & his often exasperated wife Louise move into a ritzy apartment on Manhattan’s East Side. Thanks to George’s cocky brashness endless humorous troubles befall the pair.

    Well, we're moving on upppp
    To the East side
To a deluxe apartment in the sky-y-y
Moving on up to the East side
We finally got a piece of the pie!

    1. The Jeffersons is the only of your picks I'm familiar with (I never watched it though) and it has such a nice, catchy song. Laverne & Shirley's is pretty fun.

  3. I knew Friends will be a popular pick this week so I didn't go w/ that, ahah. I haven't seen Leonard Cohen's Nevermind, but that's a cool theme song! It's fun walking down memory lane this week for me :-)

    1. I'm trying not to use a title twice this year so I had to use Friends this time because the others I had in mind were already taken haha.

  4. Oh, I love the score from Twin Peaks. Sorry but... I hate that song from Friends. I didn't like it when it first came out and I still hate it.

    1. I didn't think it was even possible to hate Friends' song! But I'm glad we agree on the score from Twin Peaks.

  6. If you aren't clapping along to the Friends theme, are you even listening right? hahaha it's such an iconic choice!

  7. Nice picks! We share with Friends. No matter how many episodes I watch, it's still so catchy. I've only watched the first season of True Detective, and haven't seen Twin Peaks. But both of those themes makes me want to check them out.

    1. Season 2 of True Detective is fantastic, and Twin Peaks is pretty weird but good. You will love it if you like David Lynch's work.

  8. I loved the songs for True Detective, though I still need to watch the third season. Friends is a popular choice! I remember how huge that song got in the 90s.

    1. I still haven't seen the third season either. At this point, I don't even know if I ever will.

  9. Friends - I like the opening song but don't love it.

True Detective - Have only seen season one

Twin Peaks - It's a fitting theme, but I don't enjoy it. It's sort eerie, depressing and unsettling.
