Boy, it was a long night, but I did it again, for the third year in a row I managed to watch the whole thing. First of all, I want to thank my beloved tea for giving me strength with his caffeine. But let's not forget chair, whose uncomfortability - I'm not even sure that's a word - prevented me from falling asleep.
I haven't slept in more than 24 hours and I just had breakfast (a delicious savoury oatmeal with mushrooms to compensate the anger), so excuse me if I'm a little foggy. Or I write nonsense. (Actually, I'm not even tired, that's just a lame excuse for being lazy and to not check the stuff I wrote).
That being said, let's talk about the ceremony (or night against Trump as I like to call it) that opened with a fun performance from Justin Timberlake. Well done, that's how you keep the young viewers engaged. And Jimmy, oh man, he was fantastic! What a spectacular host! He totally killed it.
Between a great speech and another, because there were a lot of great speeches, there was a phenomenal performance from Auli'i Cravalho. And a fantastic surprise to some lucky tourists who walked into a theatre filled with talents. I would have fainted or had a heart attack if I were them. They kinda made fun of them though and that's not okay.
A lot of other stuff happened, like the mean tweets thing which I loved. And then something terrible happened, John Legend performed City of Stars and the Audition song instead of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The performance was still stunning, but seriously people, I wanted to see that chemistry for real. Who cares if their singing voices aren't perfect.
It was a quite forgettable ceremony, though. Nothing memorable happened. I figure that's why they "accidentally" announced the wrong Best Picture winner. I'm still pissed.

And now the moment you all have been waiting since you started reading this, the winners and losers (the winners are the bold ones). And some comments too because I got time for that. It's not like it's 7 am or anything. And while I'm at it, I'm going to mention some memorable speeches as well, so keep reading!
Best Picture
Hidden Figures
I still can't fucking believe that happened. I was super happy when they announced La La Land won. And they started this beautiful speech about dreaming to dream and then they say there was a mistake and Moonlight, in my opinion, the worst nominee, won. Let's pretend this never happened.
Best Director
Denis Villeneuve - Arrival
Mel Gibson - Hacksaw Ridge
Damien Chazelle - La La Land
Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester by the Sea
Barry Jenkins - Moonlight
YAAAS!
Best Actor
Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea
Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling - La La Land
Viggo Mortensen - Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington - Fences
I wanted Denzel to win so badly but it's okay because Casey was amazing.
Best Actress
Isabelle Huppert - Elle
Ruth Negga - Loving
Natalie Portman - Jackie
Emma Stone - La La Land
Meryl Streep - Florence Foster Jenkins
I'm so happy right now I'm almost cried. It was love at first sight with Emma and seeing her winning that guy, as she called it, was fantastic.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water
Lucas Hedges - Manchester by the Sea
Dev Patel - Lion
Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals
Well, I wanted Dev Patel to win but it was oblivious Mahershala Ali was going to win. Well deserved though, he gave the best performance after all.
Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis - Fences
Naomie Harris - Moonlight
Nicole Kidman - Lion
Octavia Spencer - Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams - Manchester by the Sea
Omg she deserved to win so much!!! And that speech of hers made me cry. Here it is just in case you missed it:
People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed. I became an artist, and thank god I did because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.
Best Original Screenplay
As much as I wanted either La La Land or The Lobster to win I have to admit Manchester by the Sea deserved it. It's not fair, though, there were too many great scripts this year.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Hidden Figures
Fences deserved to win this imo

We are so grateful to audiences to audiences all over the world who embraced this film with this story of tolerance being more powerful than fear of the other.

Let's take a moment to read what Asghar Farhadi had to say:
Let's take a moment to read what Asghar Farhadi had to say:
I'm sorry I'm not with you tonight. My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and the other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S,' he said in a statement read out on his behalf.
Dividing the world into the U.S. and our enemies categories creates fear. A deceitful justification for aggression and war. These wars prevent democracy and human rights in countries which have themselves been victims of aggression.
Filmmakers can turn their cameras to capture shared human qualities and break stereotypes of various nationalities and religions. They create empathy between us and other. An empathy which we need today more than ever.

And a quick mention to Gael Garcia Bernal for saying this:
Flesh and blood actors are migrant workers. We travel all over the world. We construct families, we build life but we cannot be divided. As a Mexican, as a Latin American, as a migrant worker, as a human being I'm against any form of wall that wants to separate us.
I'm against any form of wall that wants to separate us.
I will be posting in the morning....regular morning:) the end was really the WTF moment wasn't it? I thought La La Land would win BP and Moonlight best director but it was the other way around. I think someone handed Beatty and Dunaway the wrong envelope because it seems they read best Actress.i wanted La La Land to win. Kim ell was pretty good as a host. I'm glad La La won for best score and song and would have been steamed that the first musical in years didn't get these 2. I am going to bed now
ReplyDeleteI couldn't handle staying up till 5am to watch this year, but wow, what a shit show I woke up to! I still can't get over that Best Picture blunder...I'm too shocked to find it funny yet!
ReplyDeleteI for one am glad that Moonlight won, there is no way that this was anything short of horrible error as PWC (the company working with the acaedmy) would not ruin their reputation for a stunt and the Academy take themselves too seriously too do anything like this.
ReplyDeleteThough La La Land would have been an acceptable winner. I was happy for them until that moment.
