It's kind of a trend nowadays making sequels to old(er) movies because what lures someone to the movies better than nostalgia? Nothing, that's what. And sequels, those people have been waiting for a very long time, is the theme of this week's Thursday Movie Picks, the weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves.
Blade Runner: 2049 (2017)
30 years after the events of the first film, LAPD officer K (Ryan Gosling) discovers a long-buried secret which leads him to track down Deckard (Harrison Ford). Although I didn't care much about this one, it still disappointed me a little. The story is so weak compared to the original and the pace just killed me. The aesthetic is lit as f**k though!
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
Three decades after the second Death Star's destruction, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has vanished, and everyone is looking for him, both the First Order and the Resistance which is led by Luke's sister Leia (Carrie Fisher). I grew up watching Star Wars and I was pretty excited about this one. It's not very original but it's a nice tribute to the original and I really enjoyed it.
Toy Story 3 (2010)
Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen) and the other toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care centre and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't' abandoned and that they must return home. It's just as beautiful as the previous films.
Special Mention: Everybody Wants Some (2016)
Set in Texas in 1980, it follows a group of college baseball players as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. A spiritual sequel to Linklater's Dazed and Confused, this one is fun, entertaining and just as amazing as Linklater's other films.
We match on Blade Runner! I enjoyed that and loved Force Awakens.
ReplyDeleteBlade Runner could have been so much better though.
DeleteWe have 2 matches! I also went with The Force Awakens and TS3. BR 2049 is sitting on my coffee table waiting for me to watch it. I'll probably get to it this weekend. I didn't much care for Everybody Wants Some. I found it meandering and pointless.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you didn't enjoy Everybody Wants Some.
DeleteAh, great picks as I've seen all of those films and thought they were great. I took an opposite approach to my list.
ReplyDeleteI'll check it out immediately.
DeleteLol I already did.
DeleteI've only seen your special mention which was okay which is about what I thought of Dazed and Confused but considering I hate all the other Linklater films I've seen I guess that's pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't that crazy about the first Blade Runner so the follow-up especially after so long didn't draw me in.
I think the first Star Wars trilogy is only okay, good entertainments for what they were but I never got the hoopla. But those three were enough for me.
No matter how many times I've tried I've only been able to tolerate the initial Toy Story for about 15 minutes so I'll never get to the sequels.
My first and third were highly anticipated and didn't meet expectations whereas my second turned out better. Maybe because their weren't those sky high anticipation.
The Godfather: Part III (1990)-Long aborning (16 years between this and Part II) wrap up of the Corleone saga isn’t terrible but a mere shadow compared to the first two. A HUGE weak point is the decision by Coppola to cast his daughter Sofia (a decent director but an atrocious actress) in a key role.
The Rescuers Down Under (1990)-Thirteen years after The Rescuers the R.A.S. (Rescue Aid Society) sends their top two agent mice Bernard (Bob Newhart) and Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor) down under to save a Golden Eagle from the evil trapper McLeash (George C. Scott). So they hop on their trusty albatross Wilbur (John Candy) and are off on their big adventure.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)-Nineteen long years after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade came this uninspired follow-up. It not that the film is horrible but for a Spielberg adventure, especially one with Ford in this role, it’s uninspired. It’s nice to see Karen Allen back in the fold but the idea that she and Ford would produce Shia LeBeouf (!!) takes the film even further into the negative category.
The Godfather: Part III was kinda disappointing for me.
DeleteOh, the special mention is an interesting pick! Haven't seen it but I'm now curious.
ReplyDeleteI really hope you enjoy it if you get to see it.
DeleteBlade Runner: 2049 is one I haven't see but definitely want to.
ReplyDeleteEverybody Wants Some definitely feels like spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused.
I hope you'll enjoy Blade Runner: 2049 more than I did.
