Plot

Buddy (Will Ferrell), an orphan boy who accidentally crawled into Santa Claus's (Ed Asner) sack of gifts, grown up in the North Pole with elves.
Once grown up, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) reveals that Buddy was born to Walter Hobbs (James Caan) and Susan Wells and given up for adoption, and that Walter never knew of his existence. He explains how Susan later died and that Walter now works at a children's book company in New York City.
Buddy, at this point, dressed up as an elf, leaves for the Big Apple to track down his father. Once in New York, he meets Jovie (Zooey Deschanel) and falls in love with her.

Opinion

Elf is a nice Christmas film that can be watched any day of the year. The humor is family friendly, which is a surprise to me since a SNL actor is in it.
Will Ferrell plays the Elf brilliantly with such innocence and he is very funny. The supporting cast is great too, with a special mention for Bob Newhart as Papa Elf.
I highly recommend this film for kids and adults, especially if you like happy-ending films.
