The 2018 Oscar nominations have finally been announced. There are a few surpises but most of them are as predictable as they can get, like Meryl Streep getting nominated for the millionth time. I mean, who didn't see that coming?!
Anyway, Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is leading with 13 nominations, followed by Martin McDonagh's Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri with ONLY 9 and Dunkirk with ONLY 7.
Here's the full list and my reactions:
Best Picture:
Call Me By Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkrik
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
WHY ON EARTH WAS LOGAN SNUBBED?! Also, what are Darkest Hour and Call Me By Your Name doing here? At least they had the decency to not nominate All the Money in the World. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is going to win anyway. I HOPE.
Best Leading Actor:
Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.
There's no Franco, of course. Other than that, this category is almost a joke. Chalamet got nominated for fucking a peach and Washington apparently didn't give a Oscar worthy performance either.
Best Leading Actress:
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margo Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post
Well, I ain't gonna add anything else about Streep. I really hope Robbie wins because she gave a hell of a performance in that movie. Not only my favourite of the year but an all-time favourites for me. McDormand is probably going to win though. But she was great so I'm okay with it.
Best Supporting Actor:
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
HELL YEAH ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE SAM ROCKWELL!!! Dafoe getting nominated for doing nothing. Okay. And Idris Elba was snubbed.
Best Supporting Actress:
Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water
I haven't seen Mudbound and Phantom Thread yet, but the others are graet. I really hope Allison Janney wins. She kills it as Tonya's mother.
Best Director:
Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan
Get Out, Jordan Peele
Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig
Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson
The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro
WHERE IS MARTIN MCDONAGH? I guess I'll root for Nolan, the guy really deserves it. P.S. Gerwig stans are finally happy.
Best Animated Fearture:
The Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Coco
Ferdinand
Loving Vincent
I'm one of the few people who enjoyed The Boss Baby, but giving it a nomination? Please tell me it's a joke. What are those people even thinking! Coco is going to win anyway, still I can't stomach The Boss Baby being called Academy Nominee.
Best Animated Short:
Dear Basketball
Garden Party
Lou
Negative Space
Revolting Rhymes
I haven't seen any of these but I'm rooting for Dear Basketball because it was written by Kobe Bryant.
Best Adapted Screenplay:
Call Me by Your Name
The Disaster Artist
Logan
Molly's Game
Mudbound
YES to Logan being the first comic book movie getting a Oscar nomination for best screenplay.

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE SAM ROCKWELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI finally saw Dunkirk on the weekend. I watched the original 1958 film first thinking the new one will blow the 1958 film away...it didn't! In fact I find the nomination for best score insulting because the whole score was annoying to say the least! It didn't make it tense but it made the whole film annoying as hell. I pray it does not win because monkeys would do a better job..sorry Hans Zimmer, I usually like you but this sucked. I would say the production design as well because new glass buildings and condos that appear on the shores of Dunkirk just didn't do it for me. The original is much better. I really want to see The darkest Hour as i love history and Churchill is one person I admire. I watched The hero with Sam Elliott and he should have been recognized. I have to see Daniel Day Lewis in this film and I usually love him but I question if he should have been nominated for playing someone kind of creepy. I get the creep vibe just from the trailers. I hope Tonya Harding isn't at the awards ceremony. You are right...where is Logan?? That is an excellent film. I just think if Streep hacked up a fur ball, they would nominate her. James Franco lost his bid as soon as the women came forward. For the sound stuff, one is for putting the sound together while the other is about making the sounds. Ie: a person walking on sand to represent someone walking on the beach. I forget which is which. I love to know more about the snubs
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry you didn't love Dunkirk. I saw Darkest Hour a week ago and it was pretty weak. Costumes, makeup and Oldman are the only things I liked about it. I can't wait to see Phantom Thread either, I'm sure I'm going to love it which is why I'm waiting to make my best & worst list. As for Franco, that woman pretty much ended his career.
DeleteI thought Gal Gadot would get an Oscar for Wonder Woman
ReplyDeleteShe did a great job as Wonder Woman but her performance is nothing compared to this year's nominees.
DeleteWhile I think it's a long shot, I'm rooting for Nolan to win!
ReplyDeleteMe too. He deserves it. And there's no Martin McDonagh :(
DeleteYou should definitely watch Mudbound! I really need to see CMBYN so I can see what all the love and/or criticism is about.
ReplyDeleteI will! Probably on Friday. I wanted to watch it today but I picked a shitty movie (Suburbicon) instead.
DeleteI'd say all you need to know about the sound categories is that Dunkirk will win both.
ReplyDeleteHaha I know it will.
