Thursday Movie Picks: Halloween Edition: Snow/Winter Horrors

A weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves

There couldn’t have been a more appropriate Halloween theme this week as we went from 20+ degrees to barely 10 here, and it’s cold and windy and all we are missing to be winter at its worst is snow. Anyway, this week I was forced to use some films I wasn’t a huge fan of because I haven’t seen many winter horrors.

Dead Snow (2009) - Review

It follows a group of medical students who decide to spend their vacation in an isolated cabin in the Norwegian wilderness and find themselves fighting Nazi zombies. This is a terrible film. So terrible it made me root for the Nazis.

The Shining (1980)

Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same day, it follows the Torrance family — Jack (Jack Nicholson), Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and their son Danny (Danny Lloyd) — as they move to the overlook hotel so Jack can work there as winter custodian. Things get weird fast. While it isn’t the most accurate book-to-film adaptation but it’s a very good film.

The Thing (1982) - Review

It follows a group of scientists and workers of a small research American base in Antarctica as they stumble upon the remains of a burned creature which actually happens to be very alive. This was a huge disappointment to be honest because people talk so highly of it. It does have great special effects though.

  1. We match with The Thing. Great movie, I was going to put The Shining but then I thought, "too easy".

    1. I had to use The Shining because I wouldn't have had 3 films without it.

  2. I'm a fan of all these movies. I understand hating Dead Snow, but I had a good time with it. Surprised by your opinion of The Thing. It's rare that I hear a bad word about it.

    1. You should know by now that I'm great at disappointing people when it comes to 80s horrors.

  3. I have, thankfully, avoided Dead Snow but love The Shining, now that I can finally watch it and not freak out. Believe it or not, I saw The Thing in the film theatre with my brother and his first wife. I have to admit, I laughed when the one guy’s head drooped off got legs and scurried off. I prefer the original film.

    1. I'm so glad to read that. I thought I was the only one who laughed at that!

  4. I like The Thing. It's the whole shape shifter among a small group of isolated people thing, they knew it was one of them and that was scary.
