From a very young age, I've always been fascinated with villains as I always found them to be the most compelling characters and therefore I almost always rooted for them. There's a problem with villains though, everyone talks about male villains. After all, most movies are made by men for men, hence there's always a male hero and a male villain. Thankfully, some films and TV series revolve around women as well, so for my first entry in Dell's Girl Week 2020 Blogathon I'm able to talk about my favourite female villains, both from the big and the small screen.
Villanelle (Jodie Comer) — Killing Eve
If you have seen BBC's spy comedy-drama Killing Eve, you will agree with me that Villanelle is one of the most lovable villains out there. What I love the most about her is that she looks so sweet and innocent, almost childlike. She is funny, playful, and also vulnerable. But when she wants to, she is the most ruthless psychopath out there.
Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie) — Girl, Interrupted
Unlike Villanelle, Lisa isn't your typical villain. She doesn't kill people for a living. Still, she is definitely the bad gall in James Mangold's film. She is a diagnosed sociopath, and her charisma and wit make her a role model to many patients while making her audience fall in love with her. But she is also cruel, capricious and very, very manipulative. She often uses her strengths to hurt others for her own pleasure, and she is great at getting under people's skins.
Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) — The Harry Potter Franchise
While I love Harry, Ron and Hermione, I've always had a soft spot for the villains. I had a huge crush on Drago Malfoy, I've always wanted Voldemort to win, and, most of all, I love Bellatrix. She is very loyal to Voldermort and is very dedicated to her cause, which is one of the reasons why I've always been fascinated by her. I also like that she never hides the fact that she's evil and enjoys ruins people's lives. Sure, I will never forgive her for killing Dobby, but she is still somehow likeable and lovable.
Helena Bonham Carter is great in everything. I haven't finished this franchise, yet, but I'm all in on Carter. I haven't seen either of your other movies. I'm quite ashamed of not having seen Girl, Interrupted since I meant to so many years ago. Sigh. Thanks for joining again!

DeleteHelena Bonham Carter is the fucking shit! She killed it as Bellatrix. She just stole every moment in that film. And that duel between her and Molly Weasley was worth it.

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the first but Angelina is fierce in Girl, Interrupted. I didn't love the movie but she certainly made the most of her role.
HBC has a lot of fun chomping on the scenery in her role as Bellatrix and she makes vivid what could have been a character who gets lots in all the noise.
You're so right about Carter. I didn't care much about Bellatrix in the books but I fell in love with her on screen.
DeleteGreat list! I want to watch Killing Eve, the trailers I saw for this last season were very intriguing and Comer and Oh seem like they're having a blast.
