Thursday Movie Picks: Movies You Have a Different Opinion After Rewatch

I don't usually change my mind and, for this reason, I never rewatch movies. Unless I really enjoyed them, of course. There are some exceptions here and there though, like when a film loved by most was average at best for me, or when I'm just curious to know how I'd feel today about movies I loved as a kid and teen. The latter are the movies I'm focusing on for this week's Thursday Movie Picks, the weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves.

The Pagemaster (1994)

The story follows Richard, a young cowardly boy who enters a library to escape a storm only to be transformed into a cartoon and transported into a world of books. Although I had completely forgotten about this film until a couple of years ago, I really liked this as a kid. Now, the only interesting thing about it is the storyline which is unfortunately terribly executed.

The Simpsons Movie (2007)

The story sees Homer Simpson as he screws up big time when he dumps his pig's waste into Springfield's lake. I loved this film when it came out and I watched it so many times I lost count. Then a few months ago I saw it on Netflix and had the brilliant idea to rewatch it. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't either as good as I remembered it.

Space Jam (1996)

The story follows Michael Jordan as he decides to quit basketball and play baseball instead, but he's terrible at it. In the meantime, five aliens take over Looney Tunes land and capture its inhabitants. Bugs Bunny challenges the aliens to a basketball game to see his people free and asks Jordan for help. I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid, but rewatching it last year was one of the most dreadful experiences I've had in a while.

My advice?  Do not rewatch movies you loved in your childhood or teen years as chances are you're going to ruin the good memory you have of them.

  1. This week was tough for me and it was harder for me to go the direction you went so I went the other way by liking them better the second time around. I haven’t seen any of these films but I could see watching the Simpsons movie than the other 2

    1. I wanted to go the other way around too at first but Moonlight was the only movie that came to my mind.

  2. The Pagemaster! lol I loved that movie as a kid too. I haven't seen it since then. Space Jam still holds up for me because of the camp factor, but the animation is quite awful.

Now I'm kind of tempted to rewatch Pagemaster.

    1. You’re so right about Space Jam’s animation. It looked so bad and old.

  3. I've never watched Space Jam but my husband always says it's one of his childhood favourites. If he ever mentions watching it now, I'll try to stop him!

  4. My opinion on The Pagemaster when it first came out was... eh... and it hasn't changed very much either. The Simpsons Movie is OK while Space Jam I thought it was alright and still think it's alright though I don't think it is as great as people say. Plus, I wish they would get rid of that song by ugh... R. Kelly which I think ages the film badly.

  5. I recently rewatched Space Jam and I still enjoyed the movie, even though it's not as interesting as I remembered it. I need to rewatch the Pagemaster again, although I don't know if I'll like the movie as much now.

    1. The Pagemaster has an interesting idea but it’s sooo bad, not sure rewatching it is a good idea.

  6. Nice picks! I was such a huge fan of The Simpsons movie when it came out, then a few years later I rewatched it and was like 'Wow, it's just okay'. lol I haven't seen The Pagemaster in years. I might rewatch it again if I'm feeling nostalgic.

  7. The only one I've seen is the Pagemaster, I saw it as a kid too but I didn't like it much even then.

I haven't rewatched a lot of my childhood favourites other than probably a couple of Disney movies and I still like them as much as then.
