The Simpsons Movie (2007)

I was browsing through Netflix kids because I had nothing better to do when The Simpsons Movie popped out. Since it had been forever since I last saw the movie, I decided to give it a rewatch.

The story sees Homer Simpson (voiced by Dan Castellano) as he screws up big time. To be more specific, he saves a pig from being killed in Krusty Burger and adopts it. In the meantime, Lisa (voiced by Yeardley Smith) has convinced the locals to clean up the polluted Lake Springfield and it's now forbidden to dump garbage into the lake. Of course, Homer dumps the pig's waste into the lake, polluting it. As a result, the EPA places a large dome over Springfield to hold the population. The Simpsons escape and flee to Alaska only to learn that the EPA is planning to destroy Springfield.

The plot is utterly ridiculous, way too implausible even by The Simpsons standards. It is such an unoriginal, sloppy plot that could have easily fit in a 20-minute episode but was instead stretched to fit a 90-minute movie and filled with bland, tedious subplots such as Bart wanting a father figure all of a sudden and searching for one in Ned Flanders, and Lisa's romance with an Irish boy, that go absolutely nowhere. There's a commentary about the environment, bad politics, corruption and abuse of power, but it feels forced.

Another issue with The Simpsons Movie is the characters. The main characters are completely out of characters, especially Homer as he is self-centered and selfish as he's never been before —Lisa is the only acting like she does in the series, preachy as always, and the supporting characters, for the exception of Grampa Simpson, Comic Book guy and Cletus, are nothing but time fillers that are given nothing to do. There also are some pointless cameos from Green Days, Tom Hanks and Arnold Schwarzenegger whose purpose is being dumb.

20th Century Fox
Despite all the flaws, The Simpsons Movie still manages to be somewhat entertaining and fun to watch. Although the best jokes and gags are used in the first 20 minutes and the rest it's just forced comedy that we have seen already like a million times in the show. The animation isn't bad either.

  1. I only watched this once when it first came out and I remembered that I found it really funny - but I've wondered for a while if I still would now!
