Thursday Movie Picks: Nannies and Babysitters

Despite my aversion for babies, toddlers and all the likes of, there are people who love them and make them. But having a baby is not enough, these people still want to have a life. And for this reason, they hire nannies and babysitters to take care of their children while they are out having fun or working or whatever. Which is great, otherwise we wouldn't have this nannies and babysitters themed week for Wandering Through the Shelves's Thursday Movie Picks

Without further ado, here are the only three picks fitting the theme that I have seen (I'm regretting writing this already as I'm sure other bloggers' picks will make me realise how wrong I was, and I many movies I've completely forgotten about).

Babysitting (2011)

On the day of his 30th birthday, Franck (Philippe Lacheau) is "asked" by his boss (Gérard Jugnot) to babysit his son, Rémi (Enzo Tomasini), and is forced to a quiet night. But at some point, Franck's friends show up and the next morning Franck wakes up only to discover that the kid is missing. It's been years since I saw this but I laughed a lot. It's some sort of The Hangover, only there's a missing kid involved.

The Sitter (2011)

Although reluctant about it, Noah (Jonah Hill) agrees to babysit the kid next door (Max Records). At some point, he gets a booty call from his girlfriend (Ari Graynor), and embarks on an urban adventure that soon spins out of control. I don't know how I ended up watching this as I hate Jonah Hill since always but I did and I wasn't a big fan of it.

Tully (2018) - review

After giving birth to her third child, Marlo (Charlize Theron) is exhausted all the time and is having a hard time accepting her new body. Her life changes completely when she hires a night nanny, Tully (Mackenzie Davis). I loved everything about this. How Reitman managed to find humour in such unusual places, how he balanced it with drama, and the performances, especially the performances.

  3. Tully was so amazing. I related to it maybe a bit too much tbh, especially having a child on the spectrum and then twins. A very poignant and realistic (enough) look at parenting.

    1. I’m glad Tully is getting so much love. Also, it’s nice to know people in similar situations can relate. It means the filmmakers did as good a job as I thought.

  4. Well I've seen bits of The Sitter, which was enough to tell me that I'd seen enough, and Tully is in my queue but hasn't worked its way to the top yet but I like Charlize so I have positive vibes about it. Babysitting is a new one to me.

I picked three in the Nanny/Governess line.

Jane Eyre (1943)-After losing her parents and being raised in a hellish boarding school one step above an orphan asylum Jane Eyre (Joan Fontaine) is hired to be governess for Adele (Margaret O’Brien) the daughter of intense, brooding Edward Rochester (Orson Welles) at the remote Thornfield mansion. Attracted to him but wary she soon finds the mansion is a place of many secrets, some of which could be deadly. Based on the Charlotte Bronte novel.

The Nanny (1965)-Nanny (Bette Davis), a London family's live-in maid, brings morbid 10-year-old Joey (William Dix) back from the psychiatric ward he's been in for two years, since the death of his younger sister. Joey refuses to eat any food Nanny's prepared or take a bath with her in the room. He also demands to sleep in a room with a lock. Joey's parents-workaholic Bill (James Villiers) and neurotic Virgie (Wendy Craig)-are sure Joey is disturbed, but he may have good reason to be terrified of Nanny. A battle of wits and wills ensues. Taut psychological drama was unfortunately lumped in with the hagsploitation films that became popular after the success of Davis’s “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” It is unrelated to them and much better.

The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (1992)-During what should be a routine visit to her new obstetrician Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra) is molested by the doctor and reports him to the police. Rather than taking the rap the doctor commits suicide. The shock of the accusations and suicide causes the doctor's pregnant wife, Peyton (Rebecca De Mornay), to miscarry. Now unhinged mentally but seemingly normal Peyton poses as a nanny for the Bartel family with the intention of tearing Claire's life apart, seducing her husband (Matt McCoy) and eventually murdering the woman she blames for ruining her life. While the setup is a bit ripe De Mornay is fantastic and makes the picture much more than it should be.

    1. Please watch Tully, it’s great. Also, I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one who’s cant stand Hill.

  6. The Sitter is a terrible film and I think it's the worst film David Gordon Green has done as it just tries too hard to be funny and exciting as it doesn't do either. Tully is a great film that I feel got severely overlooked during awards season.
