Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Globetrotting - Scripted

a weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves

I would be lying if I said I didn't struggle this week because not only globetrotting isn't a very common theme in the television world, but also because we cannot pick reality shows, travels shows, or docu-series revolving around it but only scripted series. Which being honest didn't make it that much harder for me as I don't watch those genres. Anyway, here are my picks — and I'm pretty sure I used them last year too.

The Crown (2016- )

There is quite some travelling involved in this series, from young Queen Elizabeth (Claire Foy) visiting Australia, to middle age Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) going to the States.

Killing Eve (2018-2022)

There is a lot of travelling in this one too as Villanelle (Jodie Comer) is an assassin based in Paris who works across Europe. And

Master of None (2015- )

It would have been impossible for me to pick this series if Dev (Aziz Ansari) hadn't decided to go to Italy to learn how to make pasta. Or at least I'm pretty sure that's the reason he lived there for a while since season 2 came out 4 years ago!

  1. I've only seen The Crown and that's a very inspired pick. I wish I would've thought of that! I've always meant to start both of the last two. Someday. lol

  2. I'm 0 for 3 on having seen any of yours this week though I've heard of the first two. I'm sure I'll catch up with The Crown some day. It has a great cast but I don't have Netflix so its out of reach for now, maybe a marathon one day when I stumble across it!

This was a bit difficult, though I don't watch travel shows, reality or the others that were disqualified, since I don't watch much regular television but road shows as it were had a fad back in the 60's-70's and produced some terrific shows. These were three of them.

It Takes a Thief (1968-1970)-Master cat burglar Alexander Mundy (Robert Wagner) is granted his release from prison on the proviso that he work with the US government using his particular skills to obtain sensitive info that they need to keep the world safe. Under the direction of agent Noah Bain (Malachi Thorne) who explains “Look Al, I’m not asking you to spy, I’m just asking you to steal!” Mundy jetted around the world to exotic locales on various jobs sometimes accompanied by his elegant thief of a father Alistair (Fred Astaire).

The Persuaders! (1971-1972)-After coming to blows in a bar fight fantastically rich globetrotting playboys English Lord Brett Sinclair (Roger Moore) and American Danny Wilde (Tony Curtis) are prevailed upon by the presiding judge to team up to use their distinctive expertise to solve crimes that have baffled the police. At first reluctant they soon become fast friends and adroit crime stoppers in far-flung spots around the world. The series only lasted a year because Moore departed to become the new James Bond.

Run for Your Life (1965-1968)-When attorney Paul Bryan (Ben Gazzara) is told by his doctor he has a terminal disease and will die within nine to eighteen months he decides he has a whole lot of livin’ to do and hits the road. Week after week Paul heads to a new place and new adventures as a man constantly on the move.

    1. I hope you'll get to watch The Crown. I wasn't a huge fan of the first two seasons but the cast is always terrific and it's worth watching for them.

As usual, I'm not familiar with any of your picks.

  3. Ooooh, Killing Eve is such a good example!! I remember when I watched the show for the first time and then learnt they had literally filmed only a couple streets over from my workplace in Berlin at the time. I think one of my colleagues even saw them filming during a lunchbreak haha

  5. I agree - if reality and docu-series weren't excluded, I would've had a much easier time. Unfortunately, I haven't seen your picks yet but I've wanted to watch Killing Even since it first started.

  6. I completely didn't think of The Crown...they featured the Royals traveling a lot.

And I didn't think of Killing Eve too...she is a globetrotting assassin.
