Thursday Movie Picks: Movies That Confused You

a weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves

For this week's Thursday Movie Picks, we are talking about films that confused us. And, although I wrote the post 5 minutes before posting it, I'm glad I picked the films in advance as I have so much brain fog lately I could/would have ended up picking Bo Burnham's Inside which I watched last week and was not confusing at all. And probably Kung Fu Panda too since I watched it in German and last language is still quite a mystery to me. Anyways, enough with the rambling, here are the films that confused me the most.

Donnie Darko (2001)

I loved this film. I really did. But I would be lying if I said I fully understood it. I read many fan theories online and watched multiple YouTube videos explaining the film but I'm still not sure I really got it. I will eventually rewatch it and see if my brain works better or if it still will confuse me.

The Holy Mountain (1973)

This is probably one of the most insane and fucked up films I've seen, and not in a good way. I don't even I've ever seen a movie that confused me as much as this one did. I'm not planning on rewatching it though because it was bad and disgusting. I could look past the useless nudity but the animal cruelty? NOPE. By the way, I couldn't even remember the title of this movie and wrote "the one about Jesus" in my notes lol.

Mulholland Drive (2001)

This is the first film by David Lynch I watched. I think I was 16, and I enjoyed it. But boy was the movie confusing! I've been meaning to rewatch it for years but I'm just never in the mood. And always end up watching terrible movies instead.

  1. I found parts of Donnie Darko okay, others entertainingly strange and others just weird to be weird.

I tried with Mulholland Drive but I just couldn't work up any enthusiasm for the twists and turns it was handing out. I have to say though that of the David Lynch films that I've seen I've only liked one-The Elephant Man-so I wasn't surprised this didn't work for me.

One of my choices is also a Lynch film.

Brazil (1985)-Some low-level flunky (Jonathan Pryce) in a world dominated by machines and technology spends his time daydreaming to escape his mundane existence leading to a muddled mess of confusion and ennui for the audience.

Eraserhead (1977)-In the gloomy city Henry (John Nance) lives in a bleak apartment with his wife Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) a one night stand he knocked up. When the baby comes it’s a bizarre lizard-like creature that won't stop wailing. Henry tries to find the reasoning behind this from the other tenants, including a disfigured lady who lives inside a radiator, but answers aren’t easy to come by. In my case they were impossible.

Liquid Sky (1982)- An alien creature invades New York's punk subculture in its search for an opiate released by the brain during orgasm or something like that, I’ll be damned if I could figure out what the point was or if this thing even had one!

I haven't heard of your second but from what you say it sounds highly skippable.

    1. I haven't seen The Elephant Man yet but I keep putting it off because I feel like I'm not going to like it.

Eraserhead is the only of your picks that I've seen and, while I liked it, I agree, it was so damn confusing!

  2. Donnie Darko is my favourite movie ever - I've watched it way too many times now. I thought I would love Mulholland Drive but it was just too confusing, so I guess perfect for the theme!

  4. I wish I would've picked Mulholland Drive, I still don't understand the end of that movie.

  5. Nothing in The Holy Mountain makes sense but that's what I love about the film. El Topo was a much more insane and nonsensical film but fun as fuck. I'd suggest watching Santa Sangre which I think is Jodorowsky's most accessible film to date.

I love the other picks as well as I own them on DVD.

    1. I'm adding Santa Sangre on my watchlist but I can't promise you I'll watch it considering how I felt about The Holy Mountain.

  6. I have seen your 2nd or 3rd choice and never felt the need but I have seen Donnie Darko which is an 8 on the weirdo meter. I have not figured it out either. It was interesting but I don't get it :)

  7. Nice picks! I tried to watch Donny Darko when I was a teenager but gave up halfway through because I was so confused. It'd be fun to see if I felt the same way about it today.

  8. I haven't seen Donnie Darko in a long time. It is a weird movie and I think I got it...but I definitely also had read some of the online explanations and theories.
