Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Comedies

Another "season" of Wandering Through the Shelves' Thursday Movie Picks has come to an end —don't worry though, it'll be back next year— and, like every last Thursday of the month for the past two years, it's television themed. This time we are asked to pick comedies. Without further ado, here are my favourites.

PS. Since this is the last Thursday Movie Picks of the year, I decided to pick for each the character I identify the most with :)

The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019)

It follows flatmates Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parson) and their friends Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard (Simon Helberg), four brilliant physicists who are completely lost when it comes to interacting with people, especially women. Their lives change when a beautiful girl (Kaley Cuoco) moves next door. It's not as good as it used to be, but it's still funny.

Character: Sheldon

Friends (1994-2004)

It follows the lives of six 20 to 30-something-year-old friends living in Manhattan. Over the course of ten years, they go through family trouble, romances, fights and much more. This is easily one of the funniest shows ever made as well as one of the most touching ones

Character: Chandler, duh!

The Office (2005-2013)

A documentary crew follows a group of office workers of a paper company whose workdays mostly consist of inappropriate behaviour, clashes and boredom. Not your typical office workday, in other words. I remember seeing the first episode many years ago on TV and I turned it off immediately. I gave it a second chance, and damn this is good.

Character: Creed

  1. I feel so weird for never having watched Friends. I liked The Office and I used to love The Big Bang Theory but Mayim Bialik completely ruined it for me.

  2. I'm not a regular watcher of any of these, but I laugh hysterically whenever I tune in to The Big Bang Theory and The Office. Friends, not so much. I've seen a handful or two of episodes and they're all just meh to me. I guess I'll never get the hype surrounding that show.

  3. Sorry to say that Big Bang Theory never really did much for me but I know its beloved by many. I never picked up The Office habit but there is a station around these parts that is going to start showing it from scratch on New Year's Day and I'm considering giving it a shot since I can watch from the beginning.

Now Friends I loved and never missed an episode during its entire run. Chandler and Phoebe were surely the most distinctive standouts but the whole cast, including the supporting cast-the production team was particularly adept at casting the group's parents accurately, were very talented in bringing their characters to life. Courtney Cox in particular did a fine job of making Monica and all her neurotic obsessive neatness balanced. While it was a big trait of her character it was all that defined her and aside from that she was usually the most level-headed of the group.

I reached back a bit further but all three have stood the test of time and are still being shown.

The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-1966)-Brilliant comedy that still holds up today. Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) is the head writer on The Alan Brady Show (played by series creator Carl Reiner) along with his team Sally Rogers (Rose Marie) & Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and lives with his wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) and son Richie in New Rochelle, New York. The show follows the clan’s various adventures and misadventures with insight and humor.

The Carol Burnett Show (1967-1978)-Sketch comedy driven by the comedy queen and her merry band of clowns usually comprised of Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vickie Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner. Some of the better known skits include The Family (which was eventually spun off as Mama’s Family), As the Stomach Turns, and the classic Went With the Wind among many, many others.

WKRP in Cincinnati (1978-1982)-Program director Andy Travis (Gary Sandy) arrives for his first day of work at elevator music playing radio station WKRP in the title city and turns the place on its ear by changing it to a Rock n Roll format. Along for the ride is a colorful assortment of characters including curvaceous receptionist Jennifer Marlowe (Loni Anderson), DJs Dr. Johnny Fever & Venus Flytrap (Howard Hessman & Tim Reid), goofy but lovable managing director Mr. Carlson (referred to as The Big Guy) and other wacky characters. Quirkily humorous and the classic Thanksgiving episode “Turkeys Away!” is a must see.

    1. I missed Friends when it first aired as I was born in 1994, but I used to watch it all the time growing up and when I finished high school I had a Friends marathon and it was the best thing ever!

  4. I hope you had a great Christmas. I got sick a week before Christmas and am still sick. Fighting a fever so I have been off the radar because of this and the season. I never got into The Big Bang Theory because I hung out with the people for real during university. I love Friends and I loved Chandler who was one of my favourite characters. I never watched The Office because I never had the chance but would like to see the British and American versions

    1. I hope you're feeling better now. I had an okay Christmas. I don't like my family a lot so spending time with them wasn't that fun. I did watch some pretty good movies though :)

  5. Love Friends. It's on reruns a lot, so sometimes I do rewatch episodes here and there.

I've only caught the few first seasons of The Office, but I did like it a lot. Have you caught the original UK version? It's great as well and has shorter seasons.
