Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Dystopian/Apocalyptic

A weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves
First of all, happy Thanksgiving my American friends! And remember, don't eat too much or you'll get sick. I'm Italian so I know what I'm talking about. And now, let's talk about some dystopian TV series, shall we? Because that's what I'm picking for this week's Thursday Movie Picks. And since I wanted to integrate Dell's Girl Week 2019 into this, I kind of cheated as I picked one show and two episodes.

The Handmaid's Tale (2017- )

Plot: In a dystopian future ruled by a fundamentalist regime, the few remaining fertile women are forced to live as concubines. The show mainly follows June/Offred (Elizabeth Moss).

Although I'm yet to finish the first season because I keep starting new stuff, this series is fantastic and Elizabeth Moss's Offred is a such a strong and yet vulnerable female character — in other words, she's realistic and human.

San Junipero (2016) - Black Mirror

Plot: The lives of introverted Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and outgoing Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) change when they meet in a beach resort town named San Junipero.

I didn't love this episode — I've been meaning to give it another chance though — but it starts two interesting and well-portrayed female characters so I'd say it fits pretty well here.

Nosedive (2016) - Black Mirror
Plot: In a world where people can rate each other for every interaction they have, Lacie (Bryce Dallas Howard) has the opportunity to elevate her ratings when her popular childhood friend (Alice Eve) chooses her as the maid of honour for her wedding.

This is one of my favourite episodes of the show because Lacie is a character that we can all empathize with at some level and Bryce Dallas Howard is terrific. Also, I absolutely love that ending.

  1. I like how you split up the episodes of Black Mirror, that's never occurred to me to do that. I may have to use you as inspiration in a future one lol. I like all three of these, though The Handmaid's Tale doesn't feel dystopian to me because it seems like it could realistically happen at any time. People are terrible. lol

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the Black Mirror episodes. There are some very weak ones but most are great.

  3. I refuse to watch the first one, fuck that lunatic scientologist having the audacity to play the victims of sexual violence. Love the other picks!

I love Handmaid's Tale, the book, so I do want to check out the series very much.
