Thursday Movie Picks: Numbers in the Title

A weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves
Since I don’t seem to be able to come up with anything interesting to introduce this week’s theme I’m going straight to the point, movies that have numbers in the title. And since there are too many great films fitting the theme I decided to go with three films I loved but haven't seen in a while and therefore have been meaning to rewatch — also, they all have an actor I love.

25th Hour (2002)

It follows the last day of freedom of Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) before he begins serving a seven-year jail term for drug dealing, a day Monty spends reevaluating his life.

My high school religion teacher showed up this film and I remember liking it so much that I couldn't wait for the next lesson to finish the film and I ended up finishing it at home. This is probably when my love for Edward Norton began. Also, I'll never forget that my teacher loved the name Naturelle (played by Rosario Dawson) and said he would have named her daughter that, if he ever had one. Not so fun fact, he did have a daughter but named her Domitilla instead. Which is a terrible name if you ask me.

28 Days (2000)

It follows a New York City writer, Gwen Cummings (Sandra Bullock), who is forced to go to rehab after getting into a car accident while drunk. Of course, she doesn't want to admit that she has an alcohol and drug addiction, but gradually she begins to reexamine her life.

I haven't seen this one in ages so I don't remember much other than crying at the end and Gwen's self-destructive behaviour but I watched it more than once so I guess I really liked it.

127 Hours (2010)

It follows the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston (James Franco) who, without telling anyone, travels to Blue John Canyon to spend the weekend climbing canyons. Unfortunately while descending a canyon he falls down, and his hand is wedged between the boulder and the canyon wall.

I think it's pretty obvious why I haven't rewatched this film yet. I loved it the first time but it was such a tough watch and still shocked it didn't give me nightmares. Or maybe it did but I just forgot. I don't know. Franco was great in it though.

  2. I have only seen 28 Days which is good movie but nothing special even though Viggo is in this film. I haven’t seen the other 2 but they sound really quite good.

  3. I've only seen 25th Hour which I hate hated so very much. I do like Norton as an actor, from everything I've ever read or heard about him he seems to be a rather contemptible human being in private, but I didn't enjoy the film in the least. I can't say I'm very enraptured by the name Domitilla either.

I've been meaning to see 28 Days for years but it seems to be a hard one to get my hands on. I'm sure 127 Hours is a fine film, I've only ever heard great things, but there are just some experiences I'd rather avoid and knowing the story this is one of them.

I intended to do a theme within the theme using the number 5 but it turned out I'd used one of my three before and couldn't come up with a quick replacement so I kept one and moved on to two others I love.

5 Card Stud (1968)-In the town of Rincon, Colorado in 1880 a gambler is caught cheating by his tablemates and in the heat of the moment lynched despite the efforts of one of their number Van Morgan (Dean Martin) to stop it. Disgusted Morgan leaves town but returns when he hears that some of the other players have been killed in grisly fashion. Upon his arrival he finds the hamlet taut with tensions and a somewhat sinister Baptist minister Rev. Rudd (Robert Mitchum) who carries a pistol in his bible. The situation only becomes more fraught as others of the lynch mob fall victim one by one and Morgan races to solve the mystery. Superior western with a great cast which beside the leads includes Inger Stevens and Roddy McDowell.

11 Harrowhouse (1974)-Small-time diamond merchant Howard Chesser (Charles Grodin) is offered the chance to purchase and cut a large diamond by its owner Clyde Massey (Trevor Howard). But when the diamond is stolen he is blackmailed into pulling off a heist at "The System," located in London at 11 Harrowhouse with the help of his girlfriend Maren (a stunning Candice Bergen). Assisted by inside man, Watts (James Mason) they navigate an elaborate network of defenses to carry out the robbery. Sleek, stylish caper film.

45 Years (2015)-Kate Mercer (an extraordinary Charlotte Rampling) and her husband Geoff (an almost as fine Tom Courtenay) are planning a party to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. One week before the celebration a letter arrives for Geoff with news that the body of Katya, his first love has been discovered frozen in an icy glacier of the Swiss Alps where she had fallen 50 years ago. Disquieted by the news both start to reexamine the entirety of their relationship and as the party nears there might not be a marriage left to celebrate.

    1. The "funny" thing is that I didn't know the story of 127 Hours when I watched it. I just watched it because there is James Franco and the rating was good.

45 Years is the only of your picks I've seen and it was such a good character study.

  6. I've heard a lot of things about 127 hours, especially the cutting off either the arm or foot scene. I need to watch that movie someday.

  8. Nice picks! I really only remember 28 Days for Viggo Mortensen and Sandra Bullock, and liking their performances. 127 Hours was so intense the first time I saw it, I haven't rewatched it either. I hope to rewatch it again but I really have to be in the mood. lol
