Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks, a weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves where each Thursday you have to pick three films to match the week's topic.
This week's theme is weddings. Who doesn't like weddings? *immediately raises both hands* okay, it's not like I hate weddings, I just don't believe in them. Like Mr. Pink doesn't believe in tipping. But when it comes to wedding films, that's a whole different thing, especially comedies. So without further ado, here's three of my favourite wedding comedies.
The Hangover (2009)
Three friends wake up from a bachelor party in Las Vegas with no memory of the previous night, a missing bachelor, a tiger in the hotel's bathroom and a baby in the closet. Hilarious chaos results as they try to retrace their steps to find their friend before the wedding. This is a real comedy, one of those movies that really makes you laugh out loud. I've seen this film like a million times, and it gets better each time.
Bridesmaids (2011)
Annie's life is a mess - she is broke and in a dysfunctional relationship -, but when she finds out that her lifetime best friend is engaged, she must serve as her friend's maid of honor which means expensive rituals and competition with a bridesmaid over who is the bride's best friend. I really don't get why this film gets so much hate. It may not be Paul Feig's best, but it's hilarious and full of heart, and I really liked Kristen Wiig's character.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
30-year-old Toula, who has been brought up to be strictly Greek for all her life, falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept him. I grew up watching this film over and over again with my mother. It is probably the only film we both like, so I guess that's the reason I picked it today. Anyway it is a decent comedy, and it's quite enjoyable.
I expected to see lots more of your first two picks this week. Great picks. Still haven't seen that last one. One of these days, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteHangover was a lot of fun. But I disliked the second one sicne it's all the same thus boring.
ReplyDeleteOf the three I'm most fond of Big Fat Greek Wedding. I originally saw it in a packed theatre on its initial release and the crowd's reaction to it added so much to that first viewing. Hangover has its moments but once was enough for me. I absolutely hated Bridesmaids.
ReplyDeleteI went for a trio of more obscure titles to shine a bit of light on them.
A Wedding (1978)-Robert Altman directed film with his usual kaleidoscopic cast ranging from Lillian Gish to Desi Arnaz, Jr. of the friends and family of a young couple who intermingle at a mansion before, during and after the ceremony, not always harmoniously. Not one of his wholly successful pictures but if you’re a fan of the director worth seeking out.
Royal Wedding (1951)-Tom and Ellen Bowen (Fred Astaire & Jane Powell), an American brother & sister dance team, are headed to a London booking that coincides with the celebrations of the upcoming 1947 marriage of then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. During the sea voyage Ellen meets Lord Brindale (Peter Lawford) and falls for him. Upon arrival Tom and Ellen begin planning their show where Tom meets the elegant Anne Ashmond (Sarah Churchill-Winston’s daughter) during auditions. So smitten is he with her he literally dances on the ceiling. Many memorable dance numbers later this MGM musical culminates in many nuptials.
It Had to Be You (1947)-Daffy comedy starring Ginger Rogers as a socialite notorious for leaving men at the altar. On her fourth fiancé she’s certain she’s found the right man until on a train trip another turns up in her dreams claiming to be her true love. Returning home she’s flustered to discover the man really exists, or is he a figment of her imagination? Sort of a precursor to Runaway Bride with a twist.
I love all 3. I thought Bridesmaids was a hit?? I love the hangover and always wondered about the live chicken in their room. I love that they just never explained that one. Bridesmaids was so funny especially the upset stomachs scene..yup gross but funny. Greek Wedding is a blast and my hubby started to try windex on other things besides windows-:)
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought too - that Bridesmaid was generally liked. I certainly did. Much more so than the Hangover.
DeleteLOL Bridesmaids is AMAZING, and approximately one million times better than The Hangover, which is just fine. It gets less and less interesting for me as they piece together what happened. My Big Fat Greek Wedding isn't great but it's absolutely perfect in its way - her mother and aunt are THE BEST.
ReplyDeleteLove Bridesmaids! It kinda help breakdown the doors of comedy - showing women can be funny if you give them the chance. But there is one scene I can't watch (its just not my humour) but everything else LOVE. I also love MBFGW. I found a new fondness for it at Uni as during school it was one of a handful of films that girls at my school would watch and nothing else.
ReplyDeleteThe Hangover was great. I'm one of the 10 people on the planet that didn't like Bridesmaids. I preferred Bachelorhood more.
