Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Workplace

Do you know what day is today? Thursday, but not any Thursday, it's the 100th Thursday I participate in Thursday Movie Picks, the weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. But enough with the bragging, let's talk about this week's picks. It's the last Thursday of the month so it's TV time and the theme is the workplace. So not fun, am I right? Well, actually my picks make it look cool. Kinda.

Kevin from Work (2015)
Kevin has a huge crush on a co-worker and just before accepting a new job in Italy, he declares his love with a letter. He then finds that the offer has been rescinded and he's stuck with his crush and her boyfriend. And the weird people at the office. Not the best series out there, but I had fun watching it.

Ugly Betty (2006-2010)
Smart, hardworking, wannabe writer Betty gets a job at a fashion magazine. The problem? Everyone around her is more attractive and people make fun of her. But she won't let this stop her or her positive attitude. This was one of my favourite series. Watching it on tv in the afternoon after I had done my homework was pretty much the highlight of my day.

Suits (2011- )
On the run from a drug deal gone bad, brilliant Mike slips into a job interview with one of the best lawyers in New York and he gets hired. But he doesn't have a law degree and that equals troubles. It started out brilliant but then it declined along the seasons. But I still watch it because I care about the character too much. So yeah, I'm pissed Rachel, I meant Meghan, is going to marry Prince Harry.

  1. I remember when America won the Emmy for Ugly Betty but I never got around to watching it. Suits I had never heard of until Meghan started dating Prince Harry either.

    1. America was great in it, and having a leading female character who didn't fit the beauty standards was inspiring to be honest. So many people had never heard of Suits before that.

  2. I've never heard of your first and while I was never a devout follower of either I've seen episodes of both. Ugly Betty is a terrific show but I came to it too late to really catch up and never seem to have the time to binge watch.

With Suits I never saw enough to really place Meghan Markle but there are far worse fates than being engaged to that charming Prince Harry.

Since workplace shows are so plentiful the pickings were easy this week.

Murphy Brown (1988-1998)-After spending some time in rehab for her drinking problem broadcaster and tough broad Murphy Brown (Candice Bergen) returns to work on her news show FYI joining capable but insecure investigative reporter Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto), esteemed uptight anchorman Jim Dial (Charles Kimbrough) and perky former beauty queen turned features reporter Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford) and led by high strung producer Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud) who frequently butts heads with the assertive Murphy. For ten seasons the team tackled topical subjects (including Murphy’s baby becoming a cause celebre when Vice President Dan Quayle condemned her for having a child out of wedlock) and Murphy’s inability to find a decent secretary-over the show’s run she had nearly 100. That is unless Murphy was home dealing with her permanent housepainter-daffy, endearing conceptual artist Eldin Bernecky (Robert Pastorelli). Winner of a massive amount of Emmys, Candice Bergen withdrew her name from contention after receiving her 5th.

Designing Women (1986-1993)-At the small Atlanta interior design firm Sugarbakers the four female partners-sisters, the fiery feminist Julia & shallow much married Suzanne Sugarbaker (Dixie Carter & Delta Burke) plus single mom Mary Jo Shively & naïve country girl Charlene Frazier (Annie Potts & Jean Smart) struggle to make a success of the business while discussing and quarrelling about their lives and the situations that cross their paths to humorous effect. Providing the male prospective is their handyman, ex-con Anthony Bouvier (Meshach Taylor). Brilliantly acted sitcom addressed many sensitive subjects including AIDS, racism, spousal abuse, homophobia and in the award winning episode “They Shoot Fat Women, Don’t They?” the cruelty towards people because one’s surface appearance has changed. Ironically for a show about a workable partnership between four people the show because infamous for its hostile work environment behind the scenes with Delta Burke and the producers clashing so strongly (and publicly) that she eventually left the show. It never recovered the special chemistry of its initial lineup.

Bay City Blues (1983)-Ensemble drama of minor league California baseball team The Bluebirds as they move from town to town. As the rookies, up and comers and one time big name players try and work together to form a winning team they have to deal with outside interference as well as each other. An entertaining “lost” series this extremely short-lived show (8 episodes) was Stephen Bochco’s follow-up to Hill Street Blues and starred many performers who appeared on that show or would on his next, L.A. Law including Dennis Franz, Ken Olin and Michele Greene plus a pre-stardom Sharon Stone.

  3. The only one I'm familiar with is Ugly Betty, which I've seen a handful of episodes of. They were all pretty good, I'm just not much of a TV guy.

  4. I have not seen your first and last pick but I loved Ugly Betty and thought it was a unique show that was really quirky and fun.

  5. I've only seen a little bit of Kevin from Work.

Ugly Betty I could not stand. I have actually seen the original telenovela version prior to it and could not stand it either.

I have seen Suits from like seasons 1 to maybe season 3. I had liked it then but I got tired of it after that.

    1. I also got tired of Suits at some point, I think it was at the beginning of season 3, but then I caught up because I missed it.
