Opinion

When I first saw the trailer for Before I Fall I thought it was going to be some kind of teen version of Groundhog Day. And I wasn't wrong. However, it did exceed my expectations as it turned out to be a rather enjoyable drama.

The story doesn't break any new ground; like I said above, it's basically the teen and tragic version of Groundhog Day's. And just like most teen movies, it's clichéed. But it's not entirely predictable. There's like a major twist at the end (I won't spoil anything just in case you're interested in watching it) that left me speechless. I did not see it coming at all, it really caught me by surprise. However, I don't think it gave the story the right conclusion.

Anyway, in spite of the clichés, predictability, unoriginally and unfitting ending, the story does have a nice pace and it's quite engaging.

But I guess we should thank Zoey Deutch for that. In fact, while all the characters are tremendously stereotyped and clichéed and not very interesting, including Sam, the lead, who is nothing more than the typical mean girl, Deutch gives a nice performance, provides the character with good development and makes the film worth watching.

  1. It almost sounds like...aside from most of the movie, it's not bad....hahahaaaa. I think I know what you mean though. There are movies I have seen that have not much going for it yet it appealed to me somehow.

  2. The film I somehow mistook for the Chloe-Grace-Moritz-in-a-coma one from a few years back when I picked it up. Certainly plays like a mashup of Groundhog Day and mean-teen movies, but it was done well and the similarities didn't distract me while viewing. Liked it enough that I bought a copy later for my collection.

    1. I was planning on watching that Chloe Grace Moretz movie too but I went with this one instead.
